Jim Pistrang, former Amherst Town Meeting Moderator, and current chairman of the Residents' Advisory Committee (RAC), will join "Byline with Stanley Rosenberg," at 8 p.m. on Channel 17.
Pistrang is one of three members of the RAC, which assists Town Manager Paul Bockelman in evaluating and selecting candidates for appointment to multi-member boards and committees. The RAC, which also includes Connie Kruger and Keisha Dennis, operates under a directive to "actively encourage a diverse pool of applicants." Pistrang said efforts are ongoing to broaden the applicant pool, and the RAC is receiving outreach help from the town's Community Participation Officers.

In the new process established by Amherst's Home Rule Charter, every applicant for an appointed board is interviewed by an RAC member, Bockelman, a Town Councilor, and an Outreach, Communication and Appointments Committee member.
Amherst's numerous multi-member boards include the new Energy & Climate Action Committee and the new Ranked Choice Voting and Participatory Budgeting commissions, along with longstanding bodies such as the Planning Board and Zoning Board of Appeals.
Candidate recommendations are made by Bockelman to the Town Council, which can vote to approve and appoint a candidate, seek further information, or reject a candidate. If the Council takes no action on a candidate recommendation, it becomes effective after 30 days.
Over 130 "Community Activity Forms" https://www.amherstma.gov/…/Comm…/Com... from residents who are interested in serving have been received to date, Pistrang said. The need to fill seats on the new committees, along with vacancies created by the expiration of some terms last December, have led to a backlog of necessary appointments.
